My biggest concern was power, and it would be lacking if I weren't using subs. It's only day 1 of my trial, but early impressions are very good. So can you get very close to RP for a lot less money? I'd say yes, but you have to sacrifice a lot of time, effort and overall usability. Good and easy connectivity to vTuner, Spotify, UPnP, love the ability to adjust the gain on my Optical output from the TV - what a great difference that makes!! RP Focus v Global setting is nice and easy to use, though it doesn't seem to make much difference in my room, switching it off entirely brings the boom in a night and day difference.

RP does seem to have magically done a better balanced job overall though, the soundstage is really nice with the right recording. It took me a lot of measuring and tweaking - perhaps 10-15 hours before I got the sound good enough with my other system - compared to 20 mins with RP. Only took 4 measurements to get to 94% room knowledge, adding 2 more got to 95%, so I decided to leave it there. Much better than by miniDSP & Dirac Live? Well no not really, but it is certainly much easier to use and a far more sophisticated product. Then ran the Roomperfect setup to let it do it's DSP magic. It's limit is very high though, so not usually an issue. I wouldn't say there is any noticeable quality difference overall in the audio chain, the Allo Boss has a very good DAC performance, the miniDSP performs well too, and the A800 is perfectly decent as long as it's not being driven to its limit. I don't play loud very often, but I do like to have the occasional 30 minute blast. With the subs the overall system is loud enough, of course I expected it not to compete with the A800 in overall power and it doesn't but for all practical purposes it goes loud enough with my speakers and subs to fill the room to play loud enough. They are only 8" subs so I'm happy to cross them fairly high. With subs crossing at 80Hz it was much better, and at 100Hz better still. Well my demo unit arrived today thanks to Cinehomeįirst just tried it out with my C300s and no subs - and it sounded fine, but was clearly underpowered.
